The design process

Made from 100% sheet aluminium, AS-24 reflects the design principles I set for myself. I challenged myself to create a design without introducing any other materials, which meant that hinges, locking mechanisms, and all other components had to be made entirely from sheet aluminium.

This led to a much deeper understanding of the material — what it can do, and what it cannot. It has been a process full of trial and error, but I believe that kind of experimentation is the best way to learn, at least for me.

The mechanisms of the stool are quite simple. For example, I used the aluminium’s natural spring-back to create a locking mechanism that allows the two sides to slide easily together while preventing them from coming apart. It took time and many iterations to make it work, but I’m happy with the result.

One of the defining features is the hinge, shaped from a cutout in the seat that bends around the side. This element has been part of the design almost since the beginning. I remember talking to Metal-Henning, the craftsman who helped bring the design to life. He looked at the hinge and said: “Emil, what is this? It can’t be done — we’ll have to bend it by hand.” And he was right. To attach the top to the sides, we had to bend it by hand — a process that gives each stool a personal touch.

Material data

Aluminium Datasheet

Inspection certificate for aluminum:

Material information: AS-24, Aluminum 5754

AS-24 is made from aluminum alloy 5754, known for its strength, corrosion resistance, and excellent workability. The material is widely used in both industry and design because of its durability and aesthetic quality.

Specifications:

Alloy: 5754

Temper: O (Annealed)

Thickness: 3.0 mm

Width: 1500 mm

Surface: Matte aluminum

Mechanical properties:

Tensile strength (Rm): 219 MPa

Yield strength (Rp0.2): 103 MPa

Elongation at break (A50): 25.9 percent

What does this mean?

The material is strong and resistant, which makes it suitable for design and structural applications.

Chemical composition:

Element

Content (percent)

Magnesium (Mg): 2.9

Manganese (Mn): 0.31

Silicon (Si): 0.25

Iron (Fe): 0.32

Copper (Cu): 0.05

Zinc (Zn): 0.04

Titanium (Ti): 0.03

Chromium (Cr): 0.05

Why is this important?

The magnesium content gives the 5754 alloy excellent corrosion and wear resistance, which makes AS-24 ideal for both indoor and outdoor use.

Certifications and standards

AS-24 meets the following standards and quality requirements:

EN 485-1+2+4, EN 515, EN 573-3, EN 15088

ISO 9001 (quality management), ISO 14001 (environmental management), IATF 16949 (automotive industry)

Maintenance

The stool can be disassembled for easier cleaning (see the manual), but it’s not necessary and may increase the risk of scratches.

Wipe the surfaces with water. Avoid water with high lime content, as it may leave marks.

After cleaning, a clear metal oil such as WD-40 should be applied to saturate the surface and reduce visible fingerprints.

Finish by wiping the stool with a clean, dry cloth to remove any excess oil.
